We live in Briar Cottage, a 17th century “B listed” thatched cottage in the grounds. Known as Easter Achraw until 1900, the earliest inhabitants on record were McGregor’s although they used the pseudonym Murray. The name McGregor could only be used on pain of death after King James VI decreed it so in 1604, following alleged atrocities by the clan. Baby Christian Murray (McGregor) was born here in 1727. The titled Campbells of Breadalbane, who developed Edinample Castle in the 16th century ( which can be seen across Loch Earn on the south side, directly opposite Briar Cottages) and Taymouth Castle in Kenmore, seized Briar Cottage around the time of the Jacobite rebellion 1745 -1746. Their tenant crofters cultivated crops on Achraw hill behind the house. From the 1790’s kinsmen of an ancient local clan McLaren took up the tenancy and generations of their offspring remained for the next 200 years. We will invite you to view the original Scots pine cruck ceiling in what would have been the byre or cow shed when you come to stay in one of our holiday cottages.
