About Stronachlachar

Stronachlachar is not so much a village as an odd little collection of cottages and houses some of which once belonged to Scottish Water when they had a base there. Some of the cottages now make lovely holiday lets. Beside the steamer pier there is a tearoom which opens during the holiday season with quite an extensive and interesting menu (see below). To get to Stronachlachar, either park at the Trossachs pier at the east end of Loch Katrine and take the steamer, or you can drive there via Aberfoyle and then north pastii Loch Ard.

Yes - you may well ask 'why bother going to Stronachlachar'? The answer is simple:

It's one of the most lovely and peaceful locations in the area
It's at the Western end of Loch Katrine.
It has a pier where the steamer SS Sir Walter Scot arrives
It's a short walk from GlenGyle House, birthplace of Rob Roy MacGregor.
It's near 'Royal Cottage', built for Queen Victoria on the occasion of the opening of the aquaduct for the new water supply to Glasgow - she never used it as the windows shattered during the 21 gun salute!
It is at the end of the cycletrack / footpath from the Trossachs pier at the east end og Loch Katrine
Inversnaid on Loch Lomond is only 5 miles away
The drive to Stronachlachar from Aberfoyle is an absolute pleasure and is one of Scotland's most scenic roads

Fishing Loch Katrine for Trout and Pike

Until recently fishing was unavailable on Loch Katrine but in 2010 Loch Katrine Fisheries opened at Stronachlachar near the west end of the loch to enable trout and pike fishing on the loch with the convenience of electric powered boats. More information on the Loch Katrine Fisheries page.
