Types of accommodation available for your holiday.
Bed & Breakfast
A Bed and Breakfast establishment offers a bed for the night, a breakfast in the morning and is usually provided in a spare room in a family home. Also frequently known as a B and B or B&B. You may be offered a full choice of breakfasts; a full Scottish breakfast, a continental breakfast (coffee and crusty rolls), simple cereal followed by simple bacon and fried egg or almost any combination of the above. Occasionally a B&B establishment may offer the option of bed only without breakfast – this is usually cheaper and is convenient where a very early departure is desired. Some B&B houses will offer as an optional extra an evening meal. Various grading systems are in existence for B&B establishments but the most common is the VisitScotland grading system where the B&B is inspected and awarded a star rating from one to 5 stars. The five star rating is extremely demanding of the provider and is seldom awarded. Find Trossachs B&B here.
Self-Catering
For those who prefer more freedom in terms of when to rise, when to sleep, when to eat, and what to eat, a self catering holiday may be more suitable. Self catering properties usually offer one or more bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen with cooking facilities and some kind of sitting and living area. A better equipped self-catering property may also provide entertainment such as TV, Sky TV, a music system in addition to laundry facilities, a drying area and a garage or secure storage for bikes, motor cycles, etc. Remember that you must provide your own food and drink in this type of accommodation although most owners will provide bedlinen and towels. In some establishments power and/or fuel may be included. A self-catering property may be a cottage, a flat, a log cabin, a caravan, or any other type of accommodation where you can live with many home comforts during your holiday. Once again the most common grading system is the star rating system operated by VisitScotland. Find Trossachs self-catering here.
Hotels
Hotels are a more formal way of providing bed and breakfast, usually with the option of at least an evening meal but often with all meals available together with afternoon teas or high teas and suppers. Hotels in the Trossachs National Park come in a great variety of sizes, locations and facilities offered and are usually awarded star ratings by VisitScotland. Some hotels may have only three or four bedrooms and offer only breakfast and evening meals. Others may have perhaps fifty bedrooms and offer almost any service you care to pay for. Most hotels will have a bar of some sort, with some being open only to residents. Some of the larger hotels provide conference and function facilities and some specialize in weddings with a few being licensed to hold the ceremony on the premises. Hotels are graded by Visit Scotland and also in some cases by the AA, RAC ond other organizations. Find your Trossachs Hotels here.
Campsites & Caravan Parks
Camping and caravanning are possibly the least restrictive options as your ‘holiday home’ travels with you and the campsite or park simply provides a space for your tent or caravan together with possibly a mains power supply and usually a washroom – and sometimes a laundry facility. Caravan parks usually provide at least some hardstandings although these may be reserved for motorhomes. If you are on a backpacking or walking holiday you don’t have to worry about leaving a mess in someones home or rising early – but if you get a bit wet it may be difficult to dry your clothes in time for your next day out. There are camp sites and caravan parks all over the Trossachs with many provided by Forest Enterprise and the Caravan Club. Many smaller campsites are ‘strategically’ located in popular outdoor activity areas. Find Trossachs camping and caravan sites here.
